Fulham 1-0 Arsenal
August 24th 2008 05:19
Arsenal suffered its first defeat of the new Premier League season after a one nil defeat away to Fulham. In what was described as a performance "just not good enough" by manager Arsene Wenger, Arsenal got off to the worst possible start to game by falling a goal behind thanks to Norwegian defender Brede Hangeland's first Fulham goal at the 21 minute mark.
A corner from Jimmy Bullard caught Arsenal defenders Kolo Toure and William Gallas by suprise and Hangeland took full advantage of the defensive lapse by poking home at the near post.
Arsenal were shell shocked and they tried to respond quickly with a Bacary Sagna cross pin pointing Emmanuel Adebayor's head but Adebayor could only manage to striker the wood work. This was Arsenal's best chance for the entire game as Fulham continued to play a good style of football and continued to apply pressure.
The Cottagers could've easily added another goal before the half time whistle had Bobby Zamora taken his chance after being slipped through on goal nicely by Zoltan Gera.
Arsenal were expected to throw themselves forward in search of an equaliser in the second half as Arsene Wenger replaced Theo Walcott with Nicklas Bendtner in an attempt to salvage a point, however the young Dane made little difference and Fulham held on for a fantastic and famous victory in front of just over 25,000 people.
