Inter defeated AS Roma on penalties over night to win the Italian Super Cup. After an entertaining 2-2 draw, Inter took out the cup after captain Javier Zanetti scored his sudden death penalty. Roma Captain Francesco Totti had the chance to win the cup for his side but his penalty rattled against the crossbar and it gave Jose Mourinho his first trophy as Inter boss.
Ex- Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari made his mark for Inter by scoring in the 18th minute. Muntari put away the rebound from Maicon's effort which managed to hit the bar.
Roma, were struggling to pass the ball around with their usual pace and fluidity, equalised with a fantastic individual goal from Daniele De Rossi. De Rossi controlled a clearing header just outside the Inter box and fired in a powerful strike past Julio Cesar, who could get a hand on it but coudn't keep it out.
Roma gained the upper hand after that goal and it gave them all the momentum. Mourinho realising they Inter were having problems, decided to bring on 18 year old wonder kid Mario Balotelli. What a difference, he made, soon after coming on, he sprung the offside trap and cooly chipped Doni with a delicate finish.
Roma threw everything at Inter and they finally equalised in the 90th minute via a Mirko Vucinic header. A Pizarro corner kick found Vucinic for a deflected header off Stankovic that lifted the ball into the top corner.
Both teams had many chances during extra time as both teams started to tire and cramp. However none could take advantage of these opportunities. The game was decided by a penalty shoot-out, Dejan Stankovic hit the bar with his penalty but Totti couldn't win it for Roma. In sudden death penalties, Juan's penalty was saved by Julio Cesar and Inter captain Zanetti, did what Totti couldn't and win the Super Coppa for his side.
